OUR PHILOSOPHY

We believe that children thrive in an environment which values their own uniqueness, while providing support and opportunities to grow emotionally, socially and creatively. By building on each child’s strengths, interests and curiosities, we guide each child to explore the world around them as well as develop new abilities and form close relationships.

THE RIE METHOD

Resources for Infant Educareres

What is RIE?  Magda Gerber, an early childhood educator with a passion to care for young children, created the RIE philosophy alongside pediatrician Emmi Pickler, who shared the vision that young children will reach their full potential when viewed in ways that allow them to be active participants in their own lives.

The basis of this philosophy is respect. By the way we look, listen, and learn from others, we demonstrate our reverence for their uniqueness. The goal is to develop an authentic child who feels secure and able.

The "Educaring" approach allows parents and professionals to focus on what matters most: the connection between themselves and the children in their care.

HOW IS RIE IMPLEMENTED AT THE GROWING NEST?

What does this all mean?

ALLOWING SPACE FOR SAFE STRUGGLE AND FEELINGS OF CHALLENGE

Observe more, do less

Intentionally stepping back to watch the child try to reach a toy that is slightly further than arm's reach can be difficult to witness, but the joy that transpires when the goal is finally accomplished is significant in developing confidence and independence. Offering support through acknowledging the effort, by saying, "I saw you work so hard!"

ENCOURAGING CHILDREN TO BE AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT RATHER THAN A PASSIVE RECIPIENT

Consistent boundaries that communicate expectations

This is demonstrated by by being fully present and offering interaction when communicating with children.  An example of this might include telling children what we are doing before doing it. "I am going to pick you up to change your diaper."

HONOR THE CHILD'S UNIQUE PATH

The spirit of learning

Recognize that as much as we do not like being interrupted while working or doing chores, they do not either, and play is their “work.”

The Montessori method developed by Italian physician Maria Montessori is a child-centered approach that values each child as a unique individual.

The Montessori Method is characterized by providing a prepared environment: tidy, pleasing in appearance, simple and real, where each element exists for a reason in order to help in the development of the child. The prepared environment is proportional to children's height and size, and it has low shelves and tables and chairs of different sizes where children can sit independently.  The environment includes theme areas where related materials are exposed on the shelves, allowing freedom of movement. The environment promotes the child's independence in the exploring and learning process.

A Montessori classroom includes children of mixed ages.  This promotes socialization and respect among them naturally.
